Steam Controller — original
Legacy model: Steam Input may output mouse/keyboard or virtual gamepad actions. A trackpad is not automatically a second analog stick.
CONNECTION & TESTING GUIDE
Inspect the gamepad inputs exposed by Steam Controller setups and understand how Steam Input changes what reaches the browser.
Connect with USB or Bluetooth, focus this page and press a controller button.
Choose a model for setup notes. This does not change your inputs or identify hardware automatically.
Layout illustration only. The button grid shows the actual inputs received.
This describes the input exposed by your browser. Firmware and remapping software can already apply deadzones. These readings do not certify hardware condition.
Indices are shown as reported by the browser. Unknown layouts are not assigned stick or trigger names.
Waiting for controller input.
Connect a controller to begin.
Saved only when you choose, in this browser. Compare readings taken under the same conditions.
Identify the controller generation first. The original Steam Controller has one conventional stick and two trackpads. Valve also documents a newer Steam Controller with two sticks, trackpads and a dedicated puck; check Valve for its availability and current details.
Record the Steam Input configuration active for the browser or desktop. A layout that sends keyboard keys and mouse movement may provide little or no Gamepad API data, even when the controller works normally in Steam.
MODEL NOTES
Legacy model: Steam Input may output mouse/keyboard or virtual gamepad actions. A trackpad is not automatically a second analog stick.
Manufacturer reference for Valve’s newer two-stick design. Check official availability; inclusion does not imply hands-on testing or stock.
Steam Input can translate a trackpad, gyro or grip action into another input type. A trackpad assigned as a mouse is outside this tester’s gamepad readings. A control assigned to a virtual stick can instead appear as ordinary axis movement.
The original controller does not physically have the same controls as a standard two-stick gamepad. Named browser axes may represent a virtual layout. Use raw readings and your Steam Input bindings together instead of treating an unobserved standard button as missing hardware.
Save the layout name and connection in your setup note. If you compare two layouts, change only one assignment and check the exposed device again; a virtual controller identity can differ between configurations.
Check one variable at a time. For unwanted stick movement, release the sticks onto a stable surface and run the ten-second resting test. For a missing action, compare a direct button press with its rear-button assignment. Save a note identifying the active profile so a later result can be reproduced.
The browser-reported device name can describe a virtual gamepad. The optional model reference is your selection, not automatic hardware identification. Brand listing does not guarantee vibration, independent paddles or vendor-specific controls in your browser.
